How To Get Noticed in a Class Full of College Kids

By Sadie Brown on February 13, 2018

Let’s admit it, getting noticed in a class full of 80-100 people can be a challenge. Most professors aren’t going to remember where you sat, nevertheless your name. But don’t be dismayed; I have tips on how to get noticed in your college classes!

1. Sit in the front: Cliché, I know. Your mom is going to say the same thing, “Sit close to the front, honey.” Believe me, though, sitting up front keeps you focused, and also will grab the attention of the professor. It’s okay to be the kid up front. This isn’t high school anymore; no one is going to pick on you for wanting to learn. Everyone in that class is there for the same reason, to learn, pass, and get a degree. Professors love eye contact and participation. When they give lectures they make eye contact with the closest student, and that will be you.

2. Ask questions: Asking questions in class can be intimidating, but effective. It shows the professor that you’re actively listening and participating. It gives you a sense of control over the classroom because now the professor is aiming to answer your question, rather than mindlessly lecturing. If you’re introverted and don’t want to speak up in front of a large group, catch the professor right as class is letting out.

3. GO TO OFFICE HOURS: I feel that this is the most important. Office hours scare a lot of students, but it’s not that stressful. You go into an office, sit down, and talk. Your professor is just another human with human thoughts and human words and making a connection is never a bad thing. They’ll appreciate you taking the time to come see them and talk, and also start to put a face with the name on their roll. Remember, professors have to have office hours, and if you don’t come they literally just sit there.

4. Email them with any and all questions: Be formal when emailing, but don’t be scared to start an email in the first place. Your professor will start to remember the name they constantly see on their screen and will probably want to talk to you during office hours.

Getting to know your professor as a person is a key way to get noticed. I’m not advising you go out on the town with your professor and their family; I’m saying you need to put forth the effort of being an excellent student. Professors remember when you come to office hours, they notice if you ask questions and answer them, and they will start to call you out once you become a familiar face. After all of these steps, not only will your professor take notice, but also your classmates. You don’t have to be large and in charge in the classroom, but it pays off to try.
